Los Angeles Appellate Resources
Los Angeles Law Library and Appellate Research Resources
The LA Law Library provides substantial public legal-research resources that can be particularly useful in appellate matters.
California Appellate Briefs
The library is a designated depository for California appellate briefs and maintains a substantial collection of briefs filed in the California Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal, including digitized materials.
Appellate briefs can help a researcher understand how issues were framed, identify authorities used by the parties, and examine the procedural background behind a published opinion.
Legal-Research Databases
The library currently provides access to major legal-research resources including Westlaw, Lexis+, CEB OnLAW, HeinOnline, Trellis, and other California, federal, historical, and specialized databases.
Database availability and remote-access terms can change, so the current library listing should be checked before relying upon a particular resource.
Reference Assistance
LA Law Library reference librarians assist researchers with identifying sources, developing searches, locating difficult materials, and learning to use available databases. Reference assistance is not legal advice or representation.
Remote and Onsite Resources
Some resources are available remotely while others require onsite access. The library also maintains branch or partner access points in Los Angeles County.
Official Procedural Sources Remain Controlling
Library databases and secondary materials are research tools. Current appellate procedure should still be verified against the governing statutes, California Rules of Court, Los Angeles Local Rules, and Second District rules and orders.
