The court's local rules contain several record-related provisions particularly relevant to this resource cluster:

  • Local Rule 1 addresses specified contents of reporter's and clerk's transcripts.
  • Local Rule 2 addresses augmentation and correction of omissions from the record.
  • Local Rule 3 adds requirements for designation of the record in civil appeals.

Other local rules may apply to particular proceedings and should be reviewed when relevant.

Electronic Filing and Formatting

The Courts of Appeal use TrueFiling. Represented parties are generally subject to mandatory electronic filing, while self-represented parties may elect to e-file under the governing rules.

The Second District also publishes detailed electronic-formatting requirements concerning searchable PDFs, pagination, bookmarks, file organization, privacy protection, and related technical matters. Those guidelines were most recently revised in 2026 at the time of this research.

Second District Forms

The Second District maintains local forms in addition to statewide Judicial Council forms. Examples include its Notice Designating Record, extension applications, proposed orders concerning augmentation, proof-of-service materials, and dismissal-related forms.

Practices and Procedures

The Second District maintains a Practices and Procedures resource addressing subjects such as notices of appeal, record preparation, case information statements, briefing, motions, extensions, settlement and dismissal, and oral argument.

Court-produced guidance is useful but does not replace the current California Rules of Court or controlling local rules.

Writ Proceedings

The Second District also exercises original writ jurisdiction. Writ petitions follow procedures distinct from ordinary appeals and can involve separate record, urgency, and temporary-relief requirements.
